A departmental inquiry has been ordered against Sanjeevarayappa, Inspector of Police, K.R. Puram Police station and other crime staff, after a makeshift gambling camp organised on the occasion of Ugadi, just metres away from the police station was busted on Friday.
Sleuths from the Central Crime Branch (CCB) busted the gambling camp in an open ground where a shamiana was put up. Police arrested 32 men and seized Rs. 13.89 lakh in cash and other paraphernalia used to gamble. They said that the makeshift camp had come up in an empty plot of land belonging to Yellappa in Muniyappa Layout, who is also now being questioned. However, the organisers of the camp have fled and are still at large.
N. Satish Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East), said that the gambling camp had come up just 200 metres away from K.R. Puram Police station and hence a departmental inquiry was ordered against the inspector and crime staff attached to the station.
Gambling on the day of Ugadi and the day after is part of “tradition” in rural parts of Karnataka. However, gambling is banned by the state government.
