Unable to withstand pressure from relatives of a close friend who eloped, a teen hanged herself at home on Sunday evening at Gollarahatti village in Magadi taluk in the limits of Kudur police station of Ramanagaram district.

Kudur police said that Kalavathi (18) of Gollarahatti was an employee of a private factory in Kunigal. She and Bhagyamma, alias Yashodha, of Chinna Thimmayyanapalya were friends and colleagues.

A fortnight ago, when Bhagyamma eloped a fortnight ago with her boyfriend, her parents came to Kalavathi and started badgering her for more information about Bhagyamma’s affair, though she denied any knowledge. When their behaviour got more intimidating, she went to the police who warned them to keep off her.

However, Bhagyamma’s father, uncles, brothers and sister turned up at Kalavathi’s house on Sunday afternoon and accused her of abetting her friend’s elopement.

Thereafter, a frustrated Kalavathi wrote a suicide letter on a Rs. 10 currency note, blaming Bhagyamma’s family, and hanged herself to death. Her letter accused the intruders of trying to rape her and that the entire incident had tarnished her reputation, particularly as she was engaged to be married.

The body was found by her father Ganganna when he came home. The police are now looking out for the accused who are absconding.
