Bangalore Film Society in collaboration with a consortium of institutions will organise the sixth edition of the international film festival on water, ‘Voices from the Waters 2011', from August 25 to 28. The festival will include a daylong conference on water on August 29.

Giving details, George Kutty, coordinator of the festival, told presspersons on Monday that the festival would be organised in six venues across the city.

Although the festival would be inaugurated at Christ University, the main venue is Alliance Francaise de Bangalore. Entry to the screenings is free.

Apart from screening of internationally acclaimed films on various water themes, other attractions of the festival are painting and photo exhibitions, art installations, interactions with film directors, water scholars, grass root level voices and water songs. There will be a special screening for three days for high school students at Bal Bhavan in Cubbon Park, Mr. Kutty said.

Effective means

Pointing out that ‘Voices from the Waters' was initiated by Bangalore Film Society in 2005 as an effective way of reaching out to the uninitiated on water issues, Mr. Kutty said the festival aimed at bringing together activists, environmentalists, scientists, policymakers and others interested in this issue.

“The festival is of much importance to Bangalore as the city was facing a perennial drinking water shortage. It is unique in its approach in creating awareness among the public on water conservation,” Mr. Kutty asserted.

The festival will be inaugurated with the screening of Touched by Water , a documentary that dives into the rites of purification practiced by world religions.

37 films

A total of 37 films will be screened during the festival, including One Water , The Black Wave , Work of 1000 , Kosi Katha – The making of a famine , The River Dog , A tale of the Jamuna River and the Waterfall , Mr. Kutty said.

The festival will be inaugurated on August 25 at 5 p.m. at the Christ University, film screenings will be held between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. from August 26 to 28 at Alliance Française de Bangalore, Christ University, Badami House near Corporation Circle, Jawahar Bal Bhavan in Cubbon Park and YWCA in Koramangala.
