A 68-year-old man lost his life while fighting a burglar in his house at LIC Housing Board in Yelahanka on Tuesday night.

The deceased, Ananth Ramaiah, was living in a duplex with his son and daughter-in-law. He was a retired private firm employee.

The police said Ramaiah slept on the ground floor. On Tuesday night, he realised that someone had entered the house by breaking open the back door. He tried to grab the intruder and shouted for help. The intruder attacked him with an iron rod, catching him on the head. The burglar then fled with a suitcase lying nearby.

Neighbours rushed Ramaiah to a private hospital and alerted the police. He died at the hospital.

Ramaiah’s son and daughter-in-law, who were sleeping upstairs, were unaware of the goings-on downstairs till the police woke them up.

The police found the suitcase abandoned a few yards from the crime scene.
