A tug-of-war is on between the government and private engineering colleges yet again over vacant seats. A day after the Department of Technical Education (DTE) stalled the admission approval process citing lack of clarity from the government on filling vacant seats, college managements have written to the government seeking tuition fees for all untaken seats.
This amount, the letter by Karnataka Unaided Private Engineering Colleges Association sent on Tuesday says, will come to Rs. 40.37 crore for each college per year. This is considering the number of vacant seats to be around 12,235.
The DTE, on Monday, had written to the Higher Education Department that colleges had converted vacant government quota seats into management quota “in the absence of the government’s permission.” The DTE had restricted itself to verifying admission records of colleges.
To this, the association has said the consensual agreement between the government and college managements specifies that all remaining seats at the end of final round of counselling “shall be handed over to the respective private professional colleges.”
