To curb the vestiges of bonded labour and human trafficking still existing in the outskirts of the metropolis, a group of NGOs have launched a chariot to spread awareness on the illegal trade that uses humans in brick kilns, sweat shops and even for prostitution.
The chariot, which was flagged off at the Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Tuesday, will travel to the four taluks of Bangalore Rural District in the next four days. The Federation of Abolition of Human Trafficking, a coalition of seven NGOs, said the chariot will emphasise the helpline 1098 – which can be contacted when cases of bonded labour or sexual exploitation is seen.
After having visited Hoskote on Tuesday, the chariot will reach Devanahalli and Nelamanagala on the next two days, before culminating in Doddaballapura on September 4 for the Nyayothsava festival. The group will select high-density areas (bus stands, taluk offices, police stations) where travelling theatre artists and musicians will educate about human trafficking and the toll-free helpline.
