Students were advised to take “extreme care” before choosing the college they want to study in, during The Hindu-EDGE Career Counselling, which was held at Sambhram College of Hotel Management at Kolar Gold Fields on Sunday.

Karnataka Examinations Authority official Jayasheelan guided the students in detail about seat-selection process and said, “Do your homework on prospective colleges before the option entry”.

Syed Ariff, principal, Dr. T. Thimmaiah Institute of Technology, KGF, who spoke on engineering courses, said, “The process of concentrating on marks first and then deciding on career was wrong. Choice is a better way for success than chance.”

Sarala N., professor of pharmacology, and director, University Department of Medical Education, Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College, Kolar, who spoke on medical education, urged parents not to pressurise their children with regard to career and gave an example of how some students leave medical courses mid-way.

“These students chose the course to fulfil the aspiration of their parents and not out of their interest,” she said, and added that career counselling sessions help students choose the right path.

Sneha Rao, HR manager, Blueberry Semiconductor, and who is associated with Cigma India, gave an overview of the opportunities available outside of medical and engineering fields.

The guests released ‘thenxt.step’ handbook on the occasion.

REVA University and Presidency University, Bengaluru, were the platinum sponsors of the event, while Sambhram Institutions, Cambridge Institute of Technology, Xavier Institute of Management Entrepreneurship, Bengaluru were the gold sponsors.
