Several progressive organisations staged a dharna opposite the Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Monday demanding the arrest of Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) workers who attacked the leaders of All India Students’ Federation (AISF) and All India Youth Federation (AIYF) recently. They also demanded that the sedition charges against the two leaders, who were assaulted by ABVP members, be dropped.

Members of various organisations alleged that the police have put weaker sections against the ABVP workers, who had attacked student leaders Govindaraju and Jyothi who were distributing pamphlets criticising the “saffronisation of education” at the Government Junior College on March 30.

AIYF leader V. Chinnappa and CPI leader Kambegowda, who went to rescue the students, were also attacked by around 80 ABVP workers.

ABVP workers lied that they were shouting “Pakistan Zindabad” causing people, who was passing by, to also join the attackers.

They alleged that the police have not arrested anybody in connection with the case till today. It was a conspiracy to let the attackers go scot free, they further alleged.

They condemned the sedition case against AISF and AIYF leaders who were the victims of attack, based on a false complaint give by a ABVP worker.
