In an attempt to offer some relief to anxious medical seat aspirants in the state, Higher Education Minister T.B. Jayachandra said a decision on the status of government quota seats in private, undergraduate medical colleges will be taken by Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the 51st annual convocation of Bangalore University (BU) here on Tuesday, Mr. Jayachandra, who also holds the Law portfolio, said the government had also sought a legal opinion from the Advocate General on certain “grey areas” in the Supreme Court verdict regarding the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).
“We have already completed one round of discussions with the deemed and minority institutions. By Wednesday, we will decide on it (government quota seats). We want our students to have more seats,” he said.
BU trifurcation
The Minister also maintained that the Bangalore University will be trifurcated this year, though the undergraduate academic calendar for colleges under the varsity is all set to begin this month-end. “The Special Officers to the two new universities have also been named. Mangalore University Registrar T.D. Kemparaju has been appointed to the Bangalore North University, while S. Japhet from the National Law School of India University has been appointed to the Bangalore Central University,” he said.
