June 15, 2013 12:19 pm | Updated 12:19 pm IST - Bangalore:

Officials of Customs’ Air Intelligence Unit arrested a man and seized a crudely made gold chain which he was trying to smuggle into the country from Dubai on Friday.

The suspect was nabbed while he was trying to pass through the scanner at the BIA on landing by an Air India flight. He had concealed the chain by wrapping it with a black adhesive tape wrapped around his waist under his shirt. Officials estimated its value at Rs. 19.3 lakh.

Two days ago, officials had seized 10 gold bars weighing 1,166.40 gm from a passenger who had stashed them in a nylon belt wrapped around his neck. He had also come from Dubai. Also recovered from him were US$ 4,000 and 150 dirhams.

The officials withheld the names of the suspects.
