Cost of cremation or burial

July 26, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - BENGALURU:

Besides the BBMP-run crematorium in Sumanahalli, there are two private animal graveyards — at Kengeri and Hennur.

“We charge Rs. 300 for small animals, like dogs and cats. Many people collect the ashes of their pets. We charge Rs. 1,000 for bigger animals, like horses and cows. Many people come here as they are unable to afford the higher fees charged elsewhere,” says the supervisor of the crematorium at Sumanahalli. “We get very few cows or horses. But we get around 15 dogs in a fortnight. They are brought by pourakarmikas.”

Unaffordable prices

Private cemeteries charge around Rs. 4,500 for a pet. However, the grave will be re-used in a year. There is an option for a special burial; a gravestone will be built and the land not used for close to three years. This will cost anywhere between Rs. 18,000 and Rs. 25,000.
