The K.R. Puram police have arrested seven men, allegedly part of a group that assaulted and abused 35 women pourakarmikas in Devasandra Ward 55 on Thursday. However, the prime accused in the case, garbage contractor Nagesha and one of his associates, are absconding. “Efforts are on to track them down,” said Abdul Ahad, DCP (Whitefield).

On October 13, a group of pourakarmikas confronted Nagesha about their salaries and demanded that they be given their full wages. He allegedly abused them verbally and hurled sexual as well as caste slurs at them.

On Thursday afternoon, Nagesha arrived at Diesel Shed Road — the mustering point in the ward — accompanied by some men armed with iron rods. He allegedly threatened the pourakarmikas with physical and sexual assault.

The pourakarmikas have been asking for their salaries, which they haven’t been getting for many months.
