Consumer forum asks Bharathiar varsity to pay compensation to student

November 25, 2013 12:28 am | Updated 12:28 am IST - Bangalore:

A consumer forum here has directed Bharathiar University in Tamil Nadu to pay Rs. 25,000 with interest to a student for its failure to confirm admission for an MBA course through correspondence and for not delivering study materials.

The Third Additional Bangalore Urban District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum issued the direction based on a complaint by Hiranmayee Nath, a resident of Chandra Layout here.

She had paid Rs. 20,000 for pursuing MBA in human resources in February 2013 through an authorised study centre, Sibyl Solutions, on finding its address in the university’s website. As she did not receive any communication from the authorities on the admission till May, she tried reaching the study centre. However, it had shifted its office.

After she sent two emails to the university, she got a reply that action would be initiated against the study centre. Simultaneously, she also received an email from the study centre saying they had transferred her admission to another centre in the city. However, later, the university failed to give the status of her admission and also did not send any study materials.

On her complaint, the forum issued notices to the university as well as the study centre but they did not respond.

“The complainant’s hopes of continuing her studies have been failed due to the negligence and deficiency in service by the opposite parties [the university and the study centre],” the forum comprising president T. Rajashekaraiah and member Subhashini said in the order.

While asking the university to return Rs. 20,000 with 12 per cent interest with effect from February 16, the commission has also directed the university to pay Rs. 5,000 as compensation to the complainant.
