When you ask Craig Jenkins, a British storyteller, why he keeps coming back to India, he tells us: “Ramayana is my favourite story of all times.” Given India’s multitude oral traditions of storytelling, it’s easy to understand what draws him here. It’s the power of a story to be re-imagined in each child’s own voice that excites him, he admits.
In celebration of this power of stories, Kathai Kalatta, a Chennai-based collective, The Bangalore Storytelling Society and The Hindu Young World will jointly organise “Under the Aaladamaraa”, a storytelling festival. Storytellers from across the globe are all set to enthral the audience by narrating stories at the event. Sheila Wee, a storyteller based in Singapore, who will participate in the festival, has conducted several workshops in schools. According to her, a good story can ignite a creative spark in listeners. For more information, visit: www.kathaikalatta.com. Tickets for workshops are available on bookmyshow.com.
