Udupi’s famed crisp dosas, cushiony idlis and unparalleled filter coffee have infiltrated almost every region of Bangalore. Even the most isolated regions have embraced this cuisine with welcoming arms. So it is no different in Konanakunte, where Udupi Café is tucked away at K.C. Circle on Chunchugatta Main Road.
However, it isn’t the regular fare that is the conversation piece here, but the ‘samrudhi kashaya’ — a hot herbal beverage prepared by the gallon. A single sip of this elixir served in a steel tumbler makes the tastebuds tingle.
The kashaya is a combination of several herbs and spices blended in boiling milk. It is said to be an excellent remedy for colds and sore throats, and can be consumed any time of the day.
Another hot favourite here is the kesari bhath, which is garnished with dates and cashews. It is the perfect conclusion to a meal cooked personally by proprietor Ramakrishna Karanth, who hails from a long line of cooks from Udupi. The modest pricing and prompt service make the Udupi Café an excellent refreshment stopover.
