Austin Town is a place that lends itself to photographs rather easily: bright houses, delicate creepers, fascinating people and hidden old buildings will take up plenty of your time, if you only let them.
The houses that form the Elagondanpalya Old Police Quarters sit tranquil under the shade of large trees on Mother Teresa Road. Sheets of corrugated metal may provide better shelter from the elements than the tiled roofs that once covered these 30-something year old structures, but there’s still plenty of room for improvement as far as the residents are concerned. There’s no denying that football is important to the lads of Austin Town, but fashion comes a very close second. Shoes aren’t strictly necessary, but no outfit is complete without the black thread that is carefully wound around one ankle, or sometimes both. And a killer hairstyle? For this fifteen-year-old student making the most of his Dussera holidays, that goes without saying. Photo: K. Murali Kumar

Muniswamy, a washerman from Vannarpet, hangs out a row of towels that he has laundered for Rs. 5 a piece for a beauty parlour nearby. Although he says it’s much cheaper to wash them by hand, these days, he uses a machine so he can tackle large volumes of laundry. Photo: K. Murali Kumar
