Federation of Clubs, Karnataka, on Wednesday petitioned the State government seeking an exemption of clubs from the ambit of the liquor ban along highways.
H.S. Srikanth, secretary of the federation, said that they have petitioned the Excise Commissioner, Additional Chief Secretary, Finance, and tried to impress that the Supreme Court order, in spirit, spoke about public access to liquor, which was not the case with clubs.
“We serve only our members on our premises. So we have asked them to exempt us from the highway ban. They have assured us of considering our petition,” he said.
Meanwhile, sources said that only four clubs will be affected by the highway liquor ban and not six like expected earlier.
While Century Club in Cubbon Park has missed the 500m zone by just a few metres, the status of Bangalore Club is still not clear.
“There is a High Court stay order over the suspension of CL4 licence of the club. So an on-ground survey for the club is yet to be conducted. But it is unlikely that it will fall within the 500m zone,” a senior official added.
