Akshay Bhat of Bangalore has secured 108th rank in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-JEE) 2012.
The results of the exam, which was held on April 8, were announced on Friday.
As many as 4,79,651 students appeared for the exam, held at 1,067 centres, for admission to 9,647 undergraduate seats in the 17 IITs in the country.
Akshay told The Hindu that he wants to pursue B.Tech. at IIT Bombay.
Son of Suresh Bhat, journalist, Akshay secured 9.6 grade in Class 10 and 97 per cent in II PU.
Akshay secured first rank in the South Zone in Junior Mathematics Olympiad-2010 organised by CBSE, was selected for the National Astronomy Olympiad orientation camp conducted by Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, Mumbai, in April 2012, and qualified in the Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana 2011 exam conducted by the Union Ministry of Science and Technology.
Of the total candidates who appeared for the JEE, 24,112 have secured ranks in various categories and 19,426 have been short-listed for counselling.
Consistency counts
Around 7,000 students appeared for the JEE from Karnataka. Ganesh Ajjanagadde, a student from FITJEE, Bangalore, who secured an All India Rank (AIR) of 149, said: “Regular preparation is a must.”
Deepak D., who trained with Ace Creative Learning, Bangalore, has secured the 349th rank and also agreed on the need for consistent preparations to top this examination. “I made sure my efforts were totally focussed towards making it to the top 500,” he said.
The lure
Breaking away from the trend of studying for the exams with the sole aim of making it into the premier Indian Institutes of Technology, Sagar Honnungar and Vidhya Ramaswamy, both students of BASE, Bangalore, said they were driven by the passion they had for the subjects. “I loved the subjects. I took the entrance as a challenge and just made sure that I gave the exams my best,” said Mr. Honnugar who secured the 568th rank.
Adding to this, Ms. Ramaswamy, ranked 597, said: “I did want to always get into IIT. But it was not like I studied only for this reason. I studied because I enjoyed the subjects."
