Officials of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Saturday evening seized more than 500 files related to the multi-crore bogus bill scam reported from Rajarajeshwarinagar, Malleswaram and Gandhinagar divisions of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).
According to sources in the civic authority, CID officials seized files pertaining to works executed from 2008-09 to 2010-11 in the Rajarajeshwarinagar and Malleswaram divisions. Files pertaining to the Gandhinagar division will be picked up on Sunday morning.
It took the CID officials a lot of time to seize the files, as they had to first catalogue the files as per the prescribed format.
Sources said that these files were in possession of the Standing Committee for Taxation and Finance. BBMP officials, including executive engineers and accounts superintendents, from the three divisions are also said to have submitted some files to the CID, which is probing the scam.
The CID had issued notice to the BBMP twice, directing the authorities to submit all files pertaining to the scam.
Nanaiah's demand
The CID's move assumes significance as the issue had rocked the Legislative Council on Friday. Janata Dal (S) MLC M.C. Nanaiah had demanded an investigation either by the Central Bureau of Investigation or the Lokayukta into the scam and accused the Government of trying to brush the scam under the carpet.
He had raised questions about why only a few files had been handed over to the CID. The Chief Minister had sought time till Monday to respond to Mr. Nanaiah.
Order
Incidentally, on Friday, the BBMP's Special Commissioner had issued an order directing the executive engineers and accounts superintendents of the three divisions to submit all documents pertaining to the works and scam to the CID immediately. This was after the CID wrote to him on the same issue on Wednesday.
