Worried by the conflicting message sent out by the Union government, which has appealed to citizens to take an oath to follow the 2-bin segregation system, a group of children held placards and create awareness about the advantages of the 2bin1bag system at the Herohalli Compost Santhe on Sunday.

“When you have just two bins, hazardous waste gets mixed with dry waste. The people who pick the waste can get badly affected or hurt. If you have two bins and one bag, you can separate the hazardous waste, which can then be disposed scientifically,” said Mahesh, a student of class 7.

The children are planning to raise awareness in upcoming santhes as well. Activists feel promoting the 2bin system is a regressive step.

"The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan speaking about 2-way segregation defeats the purpose. The question to be answered is who segregates hazardous sanitary waste from dry waste? Why should such indignity be meted out to another human being," asks Seema Das, a member of Bangalore Eco Team. Instances of diseases, blindness, injuries to fingers and more among waste workers across the country have been well documented, she explained.
