Chief Minister Siddaramaiah may soon get a peek into the difficult life that communities living around the Mandur landfills lead. After meeting community leaders here on Tuesday, he has assured them of visiting their village on July 26.
“We reminded the Chief Minister of his promise of visiting the village to take stock of the problems that we face. He has now set aside some time on July 26 and agreed to visit Mandur,” said Gopal Rao, a Mandur resident.
He told The Hindu that despite assurances, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) had failed to ensure that spraying is taken up to control the stench.
He said the Chief Minister directed the BBMP Commissioner to immediately scrap the contract of the agency that has been entrusted with spraying EM solution at the landfills.
Mr. Rao said that the village was plagued by drinking water shortage, especially when the ground water had become polluted by the leachate from the landfills. Potable water is now supplied to the village through tankers. The community leaders have sought a separate pipeline supplying Cauvery water from Hoody. Mr. Siddaramaiah had assured them to looking into the feasibility with the officials of the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board.
