Chaos as police launch new traffic rules unannounced

Chaos ruled the thoroughfares surrounding Commercial Street, Infantry Road and Shivajinagar areas during the peak rush hour on Monday morning and evening as the Traffic Police implemented a new set of traffic flow patterns in the area, unannounced.

However, realising their mistake late in the night, the police reverted to the old traffic flow pattern in the area, but not before day-long traffic snarls that choked the busy area.

Motorists taking the main thoroughfares around Shivajinagar were taken by surprise when traffic policemen allowed two-way traffic on Main Guard Cross Road, earlier a one-way.

Traffic reversed

However, a left turn on the road from Infantry Road was blocked. Traffic policemen reversed the direction of traffic flow between Dickenson Road-Kamaraj Road Junction and Hospital Road throwing vehicular traffic completely out of gear.

This led to chaos as all streets were clogged with vehicles and there were also not enough traffic policemen to guide motorists on diversions through the day.

Apparently, the police did not learn from the bitter experience of the morning as traffic snarls continued in the evening too, till the new rule was withdrawn in the night.
