‘Caste census’ from April 11

April 02, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 11:09 am IST - Bengaluru:

When the enumerator conducting the Social and Educational Survey, popularly known as ‘caste census’, comes knocking at your door, you don’t necessarily have to answer all the questions if you are unaware of the details.

At an awareness programme for elected representatives of zilla, taluk and gram panchayats here on Wednesday, H. Kantharaj, Chairman of the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes, said that while the enumerator would ask all the 55 questions, people could give details for which they are aware of.

“However, the enumerator will have to put a cross against such questions to indicate that they were asked, but the respondent does not want to answer or does not know the details.”

Time enough

When asked how the enumerator would deal with respondents if they did not have time, Mr. Kantharaj said each enumerator was expected to fill in details of 120 to 150 homes in 20 days.

“In case, the door is locked, then the enumerator can collect the details on another day,” he said.

Options

Mr. Kantharaj said that if a respondent finds that his/her caste was missing in the survey, they could ask the enumerator to list it in a column. If an enumerator does not visit your home, you can contact the commission or your elected representative.
