Can a headmaster of a private school, who has to possess a postgraduate degree, work for a meagre salary of Rs. 13,600 a month?

A Division Bench of the High Court of Karnataka, comprising Justice K.L. Manjunath and Justice Raghvendra S. Chauhan, posed this question to the State government when it noticed that a headmaster’s salary in private unaided schools is fixed at Rs. 13,600, and a Class D employee’s salary at Rs. 6,000 a month.

The Bench was hearing a batch of appeals filed by several schools affiliated to CBSE and ICSE, questioning a single judge verdict of January 1, 2011.
