Campus is safe, neighbourhood is not, say students

June 16, 2016 12:00 am | Updated October 18, 2016 02:15 pm IST - BENGALURU:

Students of the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) met P.S. Harsha, DCP, North-East division, two days after staging a protest against alleged lack of safety in the vicinity of their campus.

“The NCBS campus is safe. No one ventures into the GKVK campus late at night. But it is in the immediate neighbourhoods that we face a problem,” said a student referring to the shops nearby.

“People stand outside these shops smoking. They pass lewd comments when students pass by. Some people sitting in cars and bikes ask for the phone numbers of female students,” he added.

Police assurance

Mr. Harsha told The Hindu that the police had assured the students of regular patrolling, coordinating with civic agencies, such as the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, and authorities of the GKVK campus, and making the CCTV network more robust. The students, on the other hand, plan to maintain an anonymous registry of incidents of harassment, usually one or two each month, to determine a pattern. They will alert students as well as keep the police informed about the patterns.
