Brightening their summer

May 26, 2014 11:55 pm | Updated 11:55 pm IST - BANGALORE:

Children from well-heeled families can afford to attend summer camps during the vacations . But, underprivileged slum children are forced to fend for themselves during summer holidays .

With a view to exposing these children to various cultural activities and promoting their hidden talent, a group of enterprising students organised a fortnight-long summer camp at the government primary school at Marenahalli in J.P. Nagar.

“The children were taught Taekwondo, Djembe (African hand drum), dance, clay-modelling, drawing, painting and theatre during the course of the camp,” said Archana C.K., a member of Agni, the cultural team comprising students from different colleges in the city.

As many as 61 children, between four and 14, from slums in J.P. Nagar attended the camp. They were provided with lunch and refreshments. At the end of the camp, participants were given certificates.
