Around 30 passengers had a narrow escape after a BMTC bus caught fire in the middle of the ITPL road due to suspected electric short-circuit in Whitefield on Wednesday.

The driver, who noticed smoke coming out from the engine, stopped the bus and asked the passengers to get down. The bus was going towards ITPL from Majestic. Soon fire began to engulf the bus. Police rushed to the spot and diverted traffic.

The police brought a water tanker to put out the fire before alerting the fire and emergency services. But by the time help came, the bus was charred, said a senior police officer.

Based on the complaint filed by the driver, the Kadugodi police have taken up a case and are investigating.
