The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party government of displaying gross apathy towards drought relief works in the State.
In a statement here on Saturday, KPCC president G. Parameshwara said Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar and Ministers in-charge of districts did not appear to be bothered about taking up relief works.
In times of natural calamities, the Ministers in-charge of the districts should remain in touch with district administrations and take up relief works on a war-footing. They should convene meetings of zilla panchayats and turn the heat on the officials to ensure that the people receive government assistance. Unfortunately, no Minister appears to have found such measures necessary. It shows their gross apathy, Dr. Parameshwara said.
Though the severity of drought is increasing in north Karnataka, Mr. Shettar had not taken any step to mitigate the sufferings of the people. The government, with an eye on elections, appears to be announcing populist schemes to woo voters, he said.
