Bescom’s new software to track power distribution

In a bid to prevent loss of power during distribution, the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) on Monday launched a software to help keep track of it. The power utility has tied-up with a private company to implement the Distribution Line Simulation (DLS) system that will enable accurate assessment of technical losses, especially in the rural feeder system.

Speaking during the launch, Bescom Managing Director Pankaj Kumar Pandey said the software reveals the technical losses caused during power distribution from the power station to the consumer.

At present, the technical and commercial losses (caused owing to power theft or slow reading meters, among others) is pegged at 13.72 per cent, while the transmission losses stand at 3.9 per cent, Mr. Pandey said.

“Now, we will be able to see where the technical losses are caused. This will reduce manual interface as there is no data entry and the software updates data on a regular basis,” he said. Girish M.C., Managing Director of MAD Tech Solutions Pvt. Ltd., which is providing the software to Bescom on a user-licence basis, will be installed at the sub-divisional offices.

To begin with, 62 sub-divisions (out of a total 115) and five circles will be covered.

“The engineers will be trained to handle it. They will be able to know the technical losses purely through simulation. They can plan infrastructure to plug loopholes,” he said. Along with the software, mobile apps to view the Indian Electricity Rules and Act were also launched.
