The unusually strong winds and long period of rain this season has seen the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) incurring a “record” damage of around Rs. 7 crore.
In a release, the company has said, “The April-May 2015 downpour of pre-monsoon showers had marked new records with the heavy gush and gale. More than 1,000 trees were uprooted, leading to electric pole breakage, snapping of conductors and short-circuiting in many places.”
The most damage was seen in Bengaluru Metropolitan Area Zone, and in particular Bengaluru South, which has seen 465 poles fallen. Nearly 47 per cent of the damage incurred in the city has occurred in Bengaluru South Zone.
Outside the city, Ramanagaram and Tumakuru districts have seen widespread damage at nearly Rs. 2.4 crore cumulatively.
With the rain being a precursor to the turbulent monsoon period starting June, Bescom Mangaing Director Pankaj Kumar Pandey said the electricity supply company had “engaged additional men and material” to handle the rain as well as restore power supply at the earliest.
Apart from the control room number (1912), Bescom has also asked the public to register complaints through the SMS service (58888).
