The civic body on Thursday morning seized sofas, chairs, desks and computers from the JW Marriott Hotel on Vittal Mallya Road for failure to pay property tax. However, before they could leave the premises with the seized property, the management sought a meeting with civic officials and cleared the dues.
“The hotel management gave us two demand drafts for Rs. 5.59 crore, which we encashed in two hours,” said M. Shivaraju, chairperson, Standing Committee for Taxation and Finance, BBMP.
“We had given adequate notice. They had been under-declaring under the self-assessment scheme,” he claimed.
Parul Thakur, General Manager, JW Marriott Hotel, said, “This was a matter between Gstaad Hotels Pvt Ltd (the management of JW Marriott) and the BBMP, and was resolved quickly. The hotel is operating as usual. The hotel shall refrain from providing any further comment on the matter.”
Mr. Shivaraju said that the list of defaulters has 25 names, and the BBMP will target one every week. This drive is expected to yield Rs. 150 crore that the civic body says is owed to them.
