BBMP, BMRCL to build footpaths in CBD

April 26, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - Bengaluru:

Pedestrians in Bengaluru have a reason to cheer, as footpaths on the thoroughfares of the Central Business District will be constructed jointly by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL).

The estimated cost of the project, which will cover a stretch of 32 km, is Rs. 28 crore, which will be shared equally by BBMP and BMRCL, Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy told presspersons on Saturday after a review meeting with BBMP officials.

In addition, Rs. 20 crore will be used to build footpaths on roads around Vidhana Soudha and the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium road.

He said the footpaths would not be like that provided under TenderSURE projects and that people would be able to walk on them “with eyes closed”. Footpaths that have been encroached upon would be cleared, he said.

On the issue of garbage collection, Mr. Reddy said it is important to ensure that the contractors are paid for their work.

He said the BBMP is gearing up to face several rain-related problems that the city is facing. These included dredging, repairing streetlights and fixing potholes.

No change in tax

Mr. Reddy clarified that there will be no change in the property tax rates or in the self-assessment scheme of tax collection in the near future.

The footpaths will

not be like the ones provided under TenderSURE projects, says Ramalinga Reddy
