The BBMP has taken up a drive to verify the property tax filed by the commercial properties in the city in view of the huge difference in the tax amount due from them and the actual tax paid.
At a review meeting of the Revenue Department on Wednesday, BBMP Commissioner Siddaiah set a target of 2,000 commercial properties in the eight zones and directed the zonal joint commissioners to depute three teams in the respective zones and that each team verifies at least 10 commercial properties a day and finish the job by end of the month.
They have been directed to take stringent action against those who have fudged the floor area ratio and undervalued themselves under the Self Assessment Scheme (SAS), a senior official told The Hindu .
The official said that the drive had already begun in some zones and in Mahadevapura Zone, officials found a difference of nearly Rs.1.25 crore in just one commercial property. Similarly, in the South Zone, an official, who had measured around 90 commercial properties, had found huge differences in the area declared in the SAS and the actual built-up area.
“It can be safely said around 90 per cent of commercial properties have not declared the correct tax payable. By collecting the dues and levying penalty on the defaulters, the BBMP hopes to collect around Rs.3,000 crore as property tax by the end of the current financial year,” the official added.
