The birth anniversary of Saint Basaveshwara was celebrated by different groups, including members of the Veerashaiva faith, here on Monday.

Congress leader Siddaramaiah started his action-packed day by offering floral tributes to the Basaveshwara statue near Vidhana Soudha before heading to the Kanteerava Stadium where he was sworn in Chief Minister.

Later, the Department of Kannada and Culture organised a colourful folk and cultural programme to commemorate Basava Jayanti at the Ravindra Kalakshetra.

The itinerary included Veeragasse, Puja Kunitha, Dhol Kunitha, Kamsale, Nandi Dhwaja and other performances as well as a Carnatic music concert featuring R.K. Padmanabha and Vachana Sangeetha by Nagaraja Rao Havildar. Opting to take Basava’s philosophy to the common man on the streets, the Vachana Jyothi Balaga took out a colourful procession in and around Vijaynagar, Hosahalli.
