Touted as the app you need before you hit the road in India, ‘Traffline’ helps you get real time traffic updates and navigate to your destination through the quickest route. The application, which was launched successfully in Mumbai and New Delhi, has now been made available in Bangalore with the help of the city traffic police.
Vasanth Bhagwat, who oversees the social media initiatives of the traffic police, said they had talks with the people behind Traffline about four months ago. It has been a little more than a month since the app became operational in the city.
Once you download the app and identify your location, it will display a map and guide you through the city roads to your destination. While this holds true for most GPS-enabled navigation apps, Traffline also indicates the status of traffic on each route through colour coded lines, allowing you to choose alternative routes to reach your destination faster. For example, roads highlighted in red indicate “congestion”, while those in pink indicate “slow moving traffic”.
Nagaraj Bolakatti, head of business development, Traffline, said that the traffic police share real time information on accidents, vehicle breakdowns or processions that results in slow moving traffic. The app also allows commuters to post or share their experience online.
If traffic is an issue for the city’s commuters, they will surely agree that parking is a bigger headache. Traffline is coming up with a plan to help locate parking slots. However, it is yet to be seen whether this aspect can work out in real time.
Mr. Bolakatti says that many commuters are not aware of the various no-parking zones.
