The Bengaluru International Airport will soon have at least 700 closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed at vantage locations inside and outside the airport premises to improve its security.
Half the CCTV cameras will be installed inside and half outside, a press release said here on Wednesday.
Deepak Murudeshwar, head of security and senior vice-president, Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), made the announcement at the 5th Aerodrome Committee Meeting chaired by S.M. Jaamdar, Principal Secretary, Department of Home.
Keeping passenger safety in mind, BIAL has committed itself to providing land for construction of a hi-tech police station at a cost of Rs. 8 crore near the airport.
“The BIA handled 13 million passengers last year and with the growth rate, it is likely to cater to 55 million passengers a year in the next 30 years as per the traffic projections,” he said.
Mr. Jaamdar, who is also the chairman of the Aerodrome Committee, pointed out there aren't enough toilets at the airport. “Flight delays make the situation worse as they become overcrowded. Passengers also have to wait in long queues at the check-in counters during peak hours in the morning and evening.”
