A(H1N1): death toll in Bangalore rises to three

The death toll of A(H1N1) influenza in Bangalore rose to three with the death of 28-year-old Manjunath who succumbed to the viral flu at Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences in Whitefield on Friday night.

Confirming the death the Director of Health and Family Welfare Services, Usha Wasunkar, told The Hindu that he was admitted to the hospital on Thursday with complaints of chest pain, fever and breathlessness.

He was diagnosed with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). His condition deteriorated and he was put on a ventilator. His swabs were sent for tests to the NIMHANS laboratory on Thursday evening. He died at 5 p.m. on Friday.

She said that an oral confirmation of the patient testing positive for A(H1N1) was given to the hospital late Friday night from the NIMHANS laboratory, the only testing centre in the city.

Mr. Manjunath was a resident of Bommasandra on Sarjapur Road.

Roopa Anand, a 26-year-old schoolteacher, was the first reported victim of the flu in the city on Wednesday.

On Friday morning 55-year-old Shivanna succumbed to the viral flu in a private hospital in the city.
