A group of advocates allegedly assaulted a head constable and a woman constable on duty at the Magistrate Court complex on Nrupathunga Road in the City on Tuesday evening.

The police personnel, who were injured in the alleged incident, said in their statement that they were abused in foul language, chased and attacked by a group of advocates

The jurisdictional Deputy Commissioner of Police, B.R. Ravikante Gowda, identified the victims as Basavaraju and Roopa, both attached to the Ulsoor Gate police station.

The victims were producing an accused, who was arrested on charges of harassing his wife for dowry, in the court when the alleged incident took place, Mr. Gowda told mediapersons. Ms. Roopa managed to escape from the advocates by running out from the first floor of the court premises. But Mr. Basavaraju was not so lucky. He was caught by the advocates, who roughed him up.

Identified

The alleged incident took place between 5.15 p.m. and 5.30 p.m. Police personnel at the court, who came on court duty as well as to escort the accused persons, intervened and rescued the victims, who were immediately rushed to Victoria Hospital for treatment.

“One Manjunath and his associates allegedly attacked the duo,” the officer said.

The officer, based on the preliminary investigation, said that Manjunath and his associates allegedly accosted the duo in the corridor of the Magistrate court and abused the police personnel recalling the March 2 violence, which took place on the City Civil Court premises.

The situation worsened after they allegedly attempted to misbehave with the woman constable besides abusing her in a filthy language.

Tension prevailed for nearly an hour on the court premises with groups of advocates discussing the incident. Senior police officials rushed to the spot and additional police personnel were deployed in front of the court.

“We are taking up a case under certain Sections of Indian Penal Code against the accused advocates for allegedly assaulting the government servants besides obstructing them from discharging their duties,” Mr. Gowda, Deputy Commissioner for Police, said.

Police personnel at the Ulsoor Gate police station said that the victims were too shocked that they could not speak for a long time.

Arrested

Around 11.15 p.m. on Tuesday, the Usloorgate police arrested Manjunath, from his residence in Yelahanka, said a police official at the Ulsoorgate police station.
