Absconding councillor held, on bail now

Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) councillor Shivakumar, who had been absconding, was arrested here Thursday in connection with a criminal case that was registered against him. The Independent councillor, who represents Shantala Nagar (Ward No.111), was released on bail later.

The arrest, by Cubbon Park police, follows a complaint filed by Aditya Raheja, director of Gstaad Hotels Private Ltd., which is constructing a five-star hotel on Vittal Mallya Road, under Sections 379 (Theft), 384 (Extortion), 447 (Criminal trespass) and 506 (Criminal intimidation) of the IPC against Mr. Shivakumar in the first week of April.

Vittal Mallya Road falls under the Shantala Nagar Ward.

When the police went to his house, he fled through the backdoor.

CCTV footage

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Division) B.R. Ravikanthe Gowda said: “His brother and an unidentified person were also mentioned as accused in the complaint. However, they are still at large. The complainant had submitted the CCTV footage against the accused and the police are analysing it.”

According to the complaint, on March 29, the accused barged into the construction site and ordered stoppage of work. They threatened the security guards, took away construction material such as 88 centring sheets and 37 beam rings besides causing damage to the tune of Rs. 7 lakh.

The police are probing the case.

Another complaint

Meanwhile, a case has been registered against BBMP councillor Ramesh, belonging to the Bharatiya Janata Party and representing Yediyur ward, in Banashankari police station on Wednesday.

According to the police, a Kannada television channel was conducting an event in Padmanabhanagar on various civic issues at which a few local leaders, belonging to both the BJP and Congress, were present.

Assaulted

The councillor, during the event, allegedly assaulted Venkatesh, a Congress party worker.

Mr. Venkatesh had filed an assault complaint against Mr. Ramesh who filed a counter case against some Congress leaders, the police said.
