The next phase of Aadhaar, the citizen enrolment project under way in select post offices in the city, will be rolled out on August 17 with 95 stations being set up at 14 centres across the city.
The State Government's Centre for e-Governance, the sole registrar for the Unique Identification project that seeks to create a biometric inventory of citizens, is implementing the project.
The project will be deployed in two phases, one commencing on August 17, and the other on August 30, M.N. Vidyashankar, Principal Secretary, Department of e-Governance, told reporters here Thursday. He was speaking at the Bangalore Press Club, where a special enrolment round was conducted for mediapersons and their families.
In the first phase, nine day centres (open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.) will go live at nine BBMP Community Halls in the city. [Details of these centres are given in the graphic.] Night centres (operational between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.) have been set up at five BangaloreOne centres in the city. Further, on August 17, 20 other stations will be inaugurated at the Yavanika Youth Centre. In Phase 2, five walk-in centres, comprising 63 enrolment stations, and five appointment-based centres (for those who don't want to wait in a queue) will go live.
Apart from these, Mr. Vidyashankar said they had received requests for enrolment centres from seven top institutes, including the Indian Institute of Science, International Institute of Information Technology-Bangalore, Jawaharlal Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, a few residents' welfare associations and the Bosch Group.
Successful enrolments
In two districts, Mysore and Tumkur, where the Aadhaar was first launched in Karnataka, Aadhaar numbers have been issued to around 90 per cent of citizens, said K.K. Sharma, Assistant Director-General, UIDAI. Around 2.5 crore enrolments have been completed around the country.
Meanwhile, at a meeting with BBMP officials, Commissioner Siddaiah said the civic authority would make all logistic arrangements to facilitate this “significant project”. He said that the enrolment will be completed for Bangalore within nine months.
