Bengaluru: The Doddaballapura police arrested a 30-year-old woman on Thursday for allegedly faking a robbery of 1.8 kilograms of gold valuables from her house to fund her seven-year-old son’s karate classes.
The police also arrested the karate coach for stashing the gold at the behest of the mother.
On February 17, Kavya had filed a complaint with Doddaballapura police stating that an unidentified woman had knocked on the door. When she answered it, the woman sprayed a chemical that made her unconscious. When she recovered, she realised that their gold jewellery was missing. She was alone at home at the time of the ‘attack’; her husband and in-laws were out of town.
The police took up the investigation, but began to suspect Kavya's involvement in the theft after questioning her. “We found evidence that she had faked the robbery. She had handed over 1.8 kg of gold valuables and ₹45,000 to her son’s coach Mehboob Pasha,” said the police.
According to the police, the couple’s son often participated in State-level karate championships. While Kavya wanted her son to focus on karate, her husband refused to fund his extra-curricular activities stating that the boy should focus on academics. “That was when Kavya decided to stage a robbery. She discussed the matter with Mehboob Pasha who agreed to help her,” said the police.
Both Kavya and Mehboob Pasha have been remanded in judicial custody.
