The South East Division police busted a drug racket, involving a techie, in which charas (a form of cannabis) was allegedly smuggled from Nepal and sold in Bengaluru.

The police recovered 2.7 kilograms of charas and 5.3 kg of marijuana worth ₹27 lakh from Ashok Bahadur (21), a security guard from Nepal who lives in Bengaluru; Bijay Singh (30), who is employed with the housekeeping unit of a private firm; Nizamuddin (35), a cab driver from BTM Layout; and A. Singh (34), a software engineer with a reputed IT firm.

According to the police, Ashok Bahadur used to procure charas from his contact in Bajhang district in Nepal. He would take the contraband up to the Uttarakhand border by road, cross the international border on foot, board a bus to Delhi before taking a train to Bengaluru.

“He and his associates would package the charas and sell it to college students, IT firm employees and foreign nationals,” a senior police officer said.

“This was one of the biggest drug rackets to be busted in the recent past,” says M.B. Boralingaiah, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East). Police are ascertaining whether the gang had more members.
