Police waiting for former don to recover to formally arrest him

February 08, 2017 12:45 pm | Updated 11:54 pm IST - Bengaluru:

A day after raiding the house of former don Agni Sridhar, the city police on Wednesday took Sridhar’s associate Syed Aman alias Bachhan, six of his bodyguards, and Sunil and Rohith, both accused of threatening a businessman, into custody for 14 days. This is part of the investigation into the shootout involving Dasanapura APMC president K. Srinivas and his driver, a senior police officer said.

The accused were produced before a court and taken into custody. Meanwhile, a police team is waiting for Sridhar to be discharged from hospital before formally arresting him “We are waiting for Sridhar to recover before we take him into custody,” a police officer said.

The police had tracked Rohith and Sunil to Sridhar’s house on Tuesday, but they managed to escape. They were, however, arrested later in the day when they visited Sridhar, who had been hospitalised after he complained of breathlessness during the raid.

The police have booked Agni Sridhar under the Arms Act and for criminal intimidation, after they recovered two unlicensed revolvers during the raid. The seized weapons will be subjected to ballistic examination to ascertain whether they were used anywhere.

‘No mercy for law breakers’

Taking a strong stand on the daylight shootout, the city police are contemplating booking the accused under the Goonda Act.

Additional Commissioner of Police (East) Hemanth Nimbalkar said strict action would be taken against those who break the law. The city police have been directed to keep an eye on the movement of habitual offenders and rowdies in their areas and prepare detailed reports on their movement and sources of income.

“If anyone is found to be involved in any illegal business, we will take strict action as per the law,” said Mr. Nimbalkar, who has also asked the public to share information with the police. “The city police are committed to the safety and security of our citizens and any form of rowdy activity will not be tolerated,” he said.
