Governor Vajubhai Vala, who returned the Karnataka Urban Development Authorities (Amendment) Bill that seeks to reduce the space earmarked for parks and playgrounds in layouts proposed by the Urban development authorities, has observed that the proposed amendment is not in the interest of society.

In his message to the legislature along with the returned bill, which was tabled in the Assembly on Wednesday, the governor said the proposal to reduce public spaces in residential layouts would substantially affect the “essential basic rights of citizens.”

He said: “Such reductions may lead to various problems such as air pollution and traffic congestion.”

He asked the legislature to reconsider the provisions of the Bill.
