About 8 acres of government land in Hosakerehalli, which had been encroached upon by private parties, was recovered by the district administration on Monday. The land is worth around Rs. 500 crore.

Officials said the government had around 19.36 acres, of which 5.19 acres had been earmarked for farming and 3 acres were used to lay roads. The rest had been encroached upon by private parties, who had built commercial establishments, Assistant Commissioner (Bengaluru South) L.C. Nagraj said.

After issuing notices to vacate the premises a fortnight ago, officials on Monday used earth moving equipment to demolish the structures and recover the land.

Apart from this, authorities found that one acre has been encroached upon by slum dwellers. "Officials will discuss with the slum clearance board on rehabilitating the families before taking over the property,” Mr. Nagraj said, adding that one acre of the recovered land will be earmarked for construction of Girinagar police station.

The district administration has issued a notice to Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board, which had sold one acre to a private builder who constructed a multi-storey residential complex, which has around 300 flats.

“While KIADB sold the land claiming that it belonged to them, we have sought an explanation since it violates norms,” Mr. Nagraj said.
