A day after the NGT ordered a penalty of ₹5 lakh on anybody dumping waste in a water body, BBMP on Thursday slapped the fine on a medical centre for dumping bio-medical waste in Avalahalli lake in J.P. Nagar.

Earlier this week, local residents alerted the BBMP about the problem. Sarfaraz Khan, joint commissioner, health and solid waste management, said that a special team was formed to probe the source of the waste, which was traced to a medical centre at Pulikeshi Nagar.

“Ideally, a medical centre must give their waste to one of the empanelled vendors. We sought an explanation as to how their waste ended up in the lake bed before imposing a penalty of ₹5 lakh,” he said.
