When it rains, it pours. That’s what happened in Bengaluru. In the first 13 days of July, the city received just 10.9 mm of rainfall. But as of July 29, the figure had gone up to 197.3 mm. Of this, 137.4 mm was recorded from July 26 to 29.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials said Bengaluru received 41.8 mm between 8.30 a.m. on Thursday and 8.30 a.m. on Friday. The southeastern parts received more rainfall than the rest of the city. Going by their data for the same period, which was recorded in various parts of the city, Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) officials said Bengaluru received ‘rather heavy rainfall’ (more than 35.5 mm) in the eastern and southern parts. C.N. Prabhu, scientist, KSNDMC put the average for the city at 53 mm.
“There was an upper air circulation starting from Marathwada in Maharashtra towards Tamil Nadu. As a result, there is a trough in south interior Karnataka. This is why Bengaluru Urban, Rural and south interior Karnataka received a lot of rain,” he added.
The KSNDMC expects light rainfall in various areas in the next 24 hours. The IMD predicted ‘cloudy sky with a few spells of rain or thundershowers’ for the next seven days.
