Eleven construction workers were injured when a two-storey building under construction collapsed after its centring gave way on the premises of Rashi Granites around 3.45 p.m. in Jigani in Anekal taluk here on Tuesday.
Rescue personnel from Fire and Emergency Services were continuing their operations through the night to clear the debris and find if anyone is trapped inside.
Eyewitnesses said the granite processing unit of the building collapsed suddenly when at least 40 construction labourers were at the site. It is believed that the structure was unable to bear the load of the centring.
Critical
The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, where they are recovering. While most got away lightly, the condition of one V. Prasad is said to be critical, the police said.
The other injured are Mangamma, Gurumurthy, Vinoda, Barthuavareya Kondiah, D. Kondaiah, N. Ramanaiah, J. Ramababu and C. Hanumantha (all migrant labourers from Pamaru village of Krishna district in Andhra Pradesh) and H. Kuberappa of Sarjapur and M. Narayanaswamy of Whitefield.
The police have registered a case against centring contractor G. Krishnappa and building contractor Madurappa, who are absconding.
K.R. Veerabadraiah, who led the firemen's team, told The Hindu rescue operations were hindered by granite debris on the site. “The earthmover was not able to enter the site,” he said.
