10 years’ RI for raping mentally challenged minor

Incident took place in Srirampura in August 2014

The city civil and sessions court on Friday sentenced a construction labourer to 10 years’ imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹5,000 for raping a 13-year-old mentally challenged girl in Srirampura in August 2014.

The accused ventured into the house of the victim after her mother and grandmother had left for work and raped her, the police charge sheet had said. On returning home, the family members noticed that the victim was unwell. On being questioned, she narrated her ordeal, the police said.

The family filed a complaint based on which the accused Shanmugam was arrested.

Judge Rajeshwari N. Hegde also directed the legal services authority to help discuss with the State government measures to provide financial help and rehabilitation of the victim.
