Women protest against port pollution

Displaying pots of polluted water and the coal dust accumulated in their houses, women of old city area took out a procession to the Visakhapatnam Port Trust’s administrative building on Thursday, seeking immediate end to the pollution caused by the port.

Members of the Gruhalakshmi Mahila MACS from Kotaveedhi, Padmanagar, Lakshmi talkies and Vaadaveedhi later held a dharna in front of the port’s main office. President of Chaitanya Sravanthi Shirin Rehaman explained the problems being faced by old city residents and later met VPT Chairman M.T. Krishna Babu, along with MACS president Vijaya Kumari, secretary Rukia Banu and others. According to Dr. Shirin Rehaman, Mr. Krishna Babu assured to take up every measure to control pollution. Port was being modernised in phases and once the work was completed the pollution would be zero, he said. The Chairman explained the measures being taken to control pollution at present.
